Welcome!
We thank you for your interest in the church of Christ in Norwalk, Ohio. We realize that many churches have different types of organization and different types of offices. We seek to follow God's intentions for the organization of His church. This tract is designed to help explain how we are organized. If you have any questions, please let us know!
Christ
And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence (Colossians 1:18).
We look to Christ as the Head of the church. As His body, we seek to follow Him according to His will as revealed in the Scriptures. Christ gave authority to His twelve disciples to teach mankind His will (Matthew 18:18), and therefore we seek to pattern ourselves after the will of God revealed by the Apostles. In all matters of life and conduct, along with all matters pertaining to the church, we seek God's will in the Scriptures.
Elders and Deacons
Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus that are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons (Philippians 1:1).
The church in Norwalk is shepherded by two elders, Byron Dalton and Carl Bohn (shown seated). They are responsible for overseeing and directing the church (1 Peter 5:1-4). They can be called elders, presbyters, bishops, overseers, pastors, or shepherds; all reflect their role in the church. They guide the church according to God's will in the Scriptures.
The church in Norwalk is served by three deacons, Henry Beiro, Marty Jarabek, and Brent Lange (shown standing). Deacons serve the church in various capacities as directed by the elders (1 Timothy 3:8-12).
Evangelist
Preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching...but be thou sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil thy ministry (2 Timothy 2:2, 5).
Ethan Longhenry works with the church in Norwalk as their evangelist. He works to provide lessons and classes to encourage the brethren (1 Corinthians 14: 26, 2 Timothy 4:2-5), along with working to promote the Gospel in the Norwalk area (cf. Matthew 28:18-20).
He is the evangelist, minister, or preacher; he is not a "pastor". That responsibility belongs to the elders who are qualified for that position (1 Timothy 3:1-8, Titus 1:5-7).
Members
Because we are members of his body (Ephesians 5:30).
The members are the heart and soul of the church-- without the members there is no church! Even though the elders, deacons, and the evangelist all have their responsibilities, in the end, they are members also. The members comprise the body of Christ-- each does what they can to keep the whole going (cf. 1 Corinthians 12:4-31). The members strive to live lives pleasing to God and serve Him continually (Romans 6:16-23).
Anyone who desires to serve Jesus and obey Him can become a member of His church. If you would like to obey Jesus and go to Heaven, we would love to have you join us!
